TALISMAN - Five Out Of Five (Live In Japan)
We made a deal 1993 with a new japanese label on the rise, Zero (or actually Xero, they wanted Xerox but the US company by that name would of course not allow it, so they dropped the last x - still very strange, but they´re japanese ...).

This deal included them releasing "Genesis" and the 1st album as well as committing to bring us over for a couple of promotional shows, one of which would be recorded for a live album.

The first guy I had on my mind to replace him was Jamie Borger, whom I originally wanted as drummer for John Norum´s band back in 1988.

Whereas he had no time for anything but his new band Treat in1988, when I called him in 1993 Treat had just broken up and he was ready to get on board. Finally the band was complete.

So, going to Japan was a great adventure, and prior to the trip recording a show there was a grand idea. Nobody factored in jet lag ... the traveling was extremely exhaustive, not the least so because we were stranded in Tokyo with no one showing up to help us figure out how to get to Nagoya. So after travelling more than 24 hours and only getting a few hours sleep, we weren't exactly ready for the job!.

Another thing that made it a little difficult was that in Japan they expect the perfomance for last about 2 hours or more, and we only had 2 albums to pick song from. Some of those songs were never written with the stage in mind, so we had to do some covers (none of which ended up on the CD) by Journey and Damm Yankees, etc. Still, we had a too short set for Japan, so we hasd to make some extensions here and there. And something Jamie's never done for us elsewhere - we coerced him into doing an 8 drumsolo!

But we had a good time in Japan. Everybody treated us great. Except maybe that nobody warned me of cating the stomach lining of a cow, opting instead to watch for my reaction. It's also easy to be in good mood when you're reading commercials like the one outside a car dealer: "let's enjoy your car's life together", and the immortal "have a coke day".

After the trip to Japan we went out to tour Europe. After about half of it the band sounded really good. So when I later got to hear the finished work of the live-CD I was a little, offed that we hadn't done it the other way around, going to Japan after Europe. Typical! Imagining nobody else would ever rate the album thus. I decided to give it the ironic title "5 out of 5"

This album was recorded in Kawasaki, Japan on September 27, 1993.
